- Matthew has over 25 years of China and Asia-Pacific legal and business experience, focusing on Intellectual Property (prosecution, litigation and transactions), Corporate (M&A), Technology (including early automation and AI system experience) and International Trade. Matthew has been listed as a leading corporate/IP/technology lawyer by various publishers and directories, and is an arbitrator (MCIArb) with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Beijing Arbitration Commission, and international arbitration centres in Thailand, the Maldives and the British Virgin Islands. Matthew is a regular contributor of articles on Chinese and IP/technology law to major journals, and regularly teaches international IP and technology law at the post-graduate level at a number of leading universities.
- Prior to founding MMLC, Matthew developed the Asia Pacific IP/IT Group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Hong Kong, as well as worked in Freshfield's Corporate (M&A) group in Hong Kong and London. Earlier in his career, Matthew worked as a Judge's Associate in Queensland and continues to be active in Australian legal matters. On the pro bono side of things, Matthew has been appointed official Honorary Olympic Appeals Consultant on several occasions (including 2020-21/22/24) by the Australian Olympic Committee, and been involved in a number of key research projects for the UNDP, World Justice Project, and the World Bank, focused on legal aid accessibility, rule of law and legal profession protections. Matthew was appointed to QUT's Graduate School of Business Advisory Board in 2024.
- Matthew completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Bachelor of Business at the Queensland University of Technology in 1993. He completed his Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Queensland, specialising in IP, after studying Chinese commercial law at the University of Hong Kong. Matthew is admitted in Australia, Ireland/EU, England and Wales, and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Matthew speaks, reads and writes Mandarin Chinese proficiently.
- Recent projects that Matthew has worked on include:
- Advising a European garment manufacturer on AI/automation for its Chinese facilities
- Advising Culiangwang on intellectual property issues associated with the sale of its beverages business to Coca Cola for US$400 million
- Advising a well-known online games developer on a joint venture with a Chinese developer and distributor, for Mainland China
- Advising substantial shareholders in major global transactions including that of the acquisition of JSR by Japan Investment Corporation for US$6.4B, Emerson Electric’s acquisition of National Instruments for US$8.2B, and Broadcom’s acquisition of VMWare for US$61B.
- Advising various investment banks on Chinese anti-trust issues associated with Texas Instruments purchase of National Semiconductor and Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility
- Advising various foreign shareholders in relation to the Chinese government approvals required for China Merchant's Bank acquisition of Wing Lung Bank (US$4.7 billion) and Sinopec's acqusition of Tanganyika (US$2 billion)
- Advising various Global Fortune 500 companies and start-ups, on world-wide patent protection issues, patent litigation, IP licensing and retail ventures
- Advising various Global Fortune 500 companies on trademark litigation and unfair competition actions in China, including in Hong Kong and Taiwan
- Advising several listed US retailers on all aspects of their China market entry
- Advising a major US auto company and various major IT companies, on China and Australian Customs and tax matters - planning and disputes
- Advising a major US IT and electronics company, various major auto and biotech companies, on encryption, tax and Customs issues, restructuring and IP infringement actions in Greater China and Australia
- Advising a major US and Chinese fruit growing conglomerates on PVR rights, procurement and international acquisition
- Advising a European medical health company on privacy and data protection issues arising in China and the Asia Pacific
- Representing the world's most famous city in complicated trademark disputes in China, Australia and New Zealand
- Representing a major US industrial congolmerate in corporate IP matters in Greater China, Australia, New Zealand and Korea
- Representing Australian beauty product startups in global trademark disputes
- Being appointed as arbitrator to arbitrate several commercial arbitration matters out of Hong Kong, with a monetary value averaging in excess of US$200m
- Issuing over 190 domain name dispute resolution decisions as arbitration panelist for Hong Kong and Beijing arbitration centres
